James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination in September of that same year. He was the second of four U.S. Presidents to be assassinated. Garfield was a Republican and a Civil War veteran, and prior to his Presidency, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives. During his brief time in office, he was able to pass several important pieces of legislation, including the first significant civil service reform bill in the United States. He died of his wounds from an assassination attempt on September 19, 1881.
